Travelling to Karachi for an artificial leg
A good share of the people we fit do not live in Karachi. Some come from towns with no prosthetist within three hundred kilometres. Others are in Karachi while the person arranging everything lives in Dubai, Riyadh, London or Houston. Both can be planned so that no journey is wasted.
How long do I need to stay in Karachi to get an artificial leg?
For a below knee leg, plan seven to ten days in Karachi if the visits are grouped, or two shorter trips. For an above knee leg, plan ten to fourteen days. Assessment begins on WhatsApp before you travel, so the cast can be taken on the day you arrive. Follow up is done by video, with a return visit when the socket needs changing.

- Before travel
Assessment on WhatsApp
Photos, a short video and the discharge slip. We confirm the stump is ready, the type of leg and the price range, and book workshop time for your dates.
- Day 1
Examination and cast
Arrive by late morning if you can. Full assessment, written quotation, and the cast or scan the same day.
- Day 3 or 4
Test socket
The clear socket is tried and corrected. For above knee legs, a second test socket follows two days later.
- Day 5 to 7
Alignment and first walking
The leg is assembled and tuned while you walk between the bars. Training begins.
- Day 7 to 10
Delivery and training
The finished leg, daily training sessions, and teaching for the family member who will help at home.
- From home
Follow up on WhatsApp
A walking video every few weeks. We advise on socks and exercises, and tell you honestly when a return visit is needed.
Four checks that save a wasted journey
The saddest visits are from families who have travelled twelve hours to be told, correctly, that the stump is not ready. A few photos would have spared them. Please check these first, with us, on WhatsApp.
- Is the wound fully closed? No scab, no discharge, no open corner. Your surgeon should have said so.
- Is the stump shaped? It should have been bandaged or in a shrinker sock for some weeks, and be cone shaped, not bulbous.
- Does the knee or hip straighten? Send a video. A stiff, bent joint needs physiotherapy at home first.
- Is general health steady? Sugar under reasonable control, no chest pain or breathlessness on mild effort.

Can everything be done in a single trip?
For most below knee legs, yes, in seven to ten days. Above knee legs need ten to fourteen days, or two trips. A short return visit some months later is usual when the stump has shrunk.
Which clinic is easier for out of town patients?
The Gulshan-e-Iqbal clinic on Main University Road is convenient for coaches arriving on the northern side of the city. The DHA clinic suits those staying in the south. Tell us where you will be staying and we will book accordingly.
Do you arrange accommodation?
We do not run accommodation. Most families stay with relatives. We can tell you which areas near each clinic have reasonably priced guest houses.
What if something goes wrong after we return home?
Call or WhatsApp at any hour with a photo or video. Many problems are solved with a sock or an exercise. Where the leg itself needs attention, we tell you plainly and group the work into one visit.
