Is everyone with an amputation able to use an artificial leg?
Most, but not all. It depends on healing, the joints above the amputation, the other leg, heart and lung health, and motivation. We assess each of these free of charge and say plainly if a leg is not the right answer. About the assessment.
My relative had the amputation last week. What should we be doing now?
Three things: keep the joint above the stump straight, follow the surgeon on dressings, and start arm and sound leg exercises. Message us now so we can guide the bandaging once stitches are out. The full timeline.
Is there an age limit for an artificial leg?
No. We fit infants who are pulling to stand and people in their eighties. What matters is health and strength, not the number.
Does an artificial leg look real?
With a shaped foam cover and a skin toned stocking, it fills out a trouser leg or shalwar naturally. In sandals the foot shell looks natural from a normal distance. Up close it is recognisably a prosthesis.
Is it painful to wear?
A well fitted leg is not painful. You feel firm, even pressure. Pain at a particular spot means the socket needs adjusting, and should be reported, not endured.
Can I get a price on the phone without visiting?
You can get a realistic range, yes, if you tell us the level, age, weight and activity. A firm figure needs an examination. Indicative price ranges.
Do you take an advance?
An advance is taken when you confirm the order, and the balance at delivery. Both are receipted, and the amounts are stated on the written quotation.
Is there a warranty?
Bought in parts carry their maker's warranty, which we state on the quotation. Adjustments to the socket in the first month are included.
What ongoing costs should we expect?
Socks, a liner about once a year, a yearly service, and a replacement socket after six to eighteen months. See the running cost breakdown.
How heavy is an artificial leg?
A below knee leg typically weighs 1.2 to 2 kilograms and an above knee leg 2.5 to 4 kilograms, which is less than the limb it replaces. It can feel heavy at first because it hangs from the stump instead of being part of you. A secure fit makes it feel lighter.
Can I sleep with the leg on?
No. The skin needs rest and air, and the stump should be in its shrinker sock overnight during the first year.
Can I gain or lose weight without affecting the leg?
Two or three kilos, yes. Around five kilos either way usually spoils the socket fit. Tell us if your weight is changing.
Can a woman wear a leg under shalwar kameez, or with heels?
Yes. The cover is shaped to match the other leg. For heels, the foot must be set to that heel height, or an adjustable heel foot used. Tell us what you wear for daily use and for occasions.
Is there a leg for swimming or bathing?
Standard legs must stay dry. Waterproof feet and simple water legs exist for people who need them. For bathing at home, a stool and grab bar are safer and cheaper.
Children, older patients and long standing amputees
My child was born with part of a leg missing. When should we come?
Once an orthopaedic surgeon has assessed the limb, come when the child begins pulling up to stand, usually nine to twelve months. Legs for children.
My mother is 78 and frightened of falling. Is it worth trying?
Often, yes. Even a leg used only for standing and moving from bed to chair restores dignity and spares the family lifting. We would choose a light leg with a locking knee if above the knee, and go slowly.
I lost my leg twenty years ago and never had a prosthesis. Is it too late?
Not necessarily. Stiff joints and weak muscles from years without a leg are the challenge, and physiotherapy may be needed first. Come for an assessment and we will tell you honestly.
I have a leg from another clinic that hurts. Can you help?
Yes. Bring it. We examine the stump and the leg together and tell you whether an adjustment, a new socket or a new leg is needed. Replacement sockets.
We live in a village with no prosthetist. How do we manage afterwards?

I am abroad. Can you deal with me directly instead of my elderly father?

Can I fly with an artificial leg?
Yes. Tell security staff you wear a prosthesis. You should not be asked to remove it in public, and a private check can be requested. On long flights, loosen or remove it at your seat if the stump swells, and keep the liner and spare socks in your hand luggage.
