When a family says they want a German leg, they nearly always mean Ottobock. The name is deserved. It is also the brand most often quoted without detail, and most often copied. This guide sets out what the range actually is, and who needs which part.

Is Ottobock available in Pakistan?

Yes. Ottobock knees, feet, liners and adapters are imported to order and fitted in Karachi. Ottobock is a German company, founded in 1919, and the largest maker of prosthetic components in the world. Its microprocessor knees are the Kenevo, the C-Leg 4 and the Genium X4. It also makes a full mechanical range that suits most budgets far better.

Our honest view

Strengths, and what to watch

Where Ottobock is strong

  • The widest range of any maker, so parts can be matched closely to the user
  • Long clinical track record and published research behind the electronic knees
  • The mechanical knees are robust and familiar to most prosthetists, which helps with repair
  • Standard adapters, so parts mix with other brands

What to weigh up

  • Price. The badge carries a premium at every level.
  • It is the brand most often counterfeited or sold used as new. Ask for the serial number.
  • Electronic knees need scheduled maker servicing, which means time without the knee
  • For a home based walker, a mid range knee from another maker often does the same job for far less
In Karachi

Using Ottobock in Pakistani conditions

The mechanical range is the sensible core for most Karachi users. A 3R60 or a pneumatic polycentric knee tolerates dust and heat, can be serviced locally, and costs a fraction of an electronic knee.

For the electronic knees, ask three questions before paying: how is it serviced from Pakistan and how long will you be without it, is the warranty valid here in your name, and how will it be charged through load shedding. The water rating of the Genium X4 is a real advantage in a city of wudu, monsoon and sea air, but only that model carries it.

Liners suffer most in our climate. Budget for one a year.

Artificial Leg Karachi imports and fits Ottobock components to order. We are independent of every manufacturer, recommend by need and budget, and earn nothing from steering you to one name over another. Product ranges change, so we confirm the current model, its weight rating and its water rating with the maker before anything is ordered. Ottobock and its product names are trade marks of their owner and are used here only to describe the products.

Questions

Ottobock questions

Ask your own question on WhatsApp

Is a complete Ottobock leg made in Germany?

No. Ottobock makes components. The socket is made in Karachi from your cast, and the leg is assembled and aligned here. The result depends on that work as much as on the parts.

Which Ottobock knee is best for an elderly above knee patient?

If an electronic knee can be funded and serviced, the Kenevo is designed for exactly that user. Otherwise a locking or weight activated knee is the safe choice, and it need not be Ottobock at all.

How do I know an Ottobock part is genuine and new?

Ask for the model and serial number on the quotation, see the part in its sealed packaging before fitting, and keep the warranty paperwork in your name.

How long does an Ottobock order take to arrive?

Common mechanical parts and feet, a few weeks. Electronic knees, longer. We state the expected arrival before any advance is taken.
