Indian economy components
India fits more artificial limbs each year than almost any other country, and has built an industry to match: a vast charitable programme, a government manufacturer, the Indian arms of European companies, and many private workshops. Families with ties across the border often ask about it.
Are Indian prosthetic components available in Pakistan?
Availability depends on the trade rules in force between the two countries, which change. Indian made components range from the charitable Jaipur Foot, to basic parts from the government maker ALIMCO, to European designs produced by the Indian companies of Blatchford and Ottobock. Where a direct route is closed, equivalent parts are obtained from other countries.
Who they are
Jaipur Foot, BMVSS
The charitable programme that fits rubber barefoot style feet and plastic legs free of charge, in India and at camps abroad.
ALIMCO
The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India, a government enterprise producing basic limbs and aids in large numbers for public schemes.
Endolite India
The Indian company of the British maker Blatchford, supplying its knee and foot designs across South Asia.
Indian arms of European makers
Large European makers operate in India, offering parts of their ranges at regional prices.
Private workshops
Many smaller firms making feet, knees and adapters, of widely varying quality.
The Indian tiers
| Source | What it offers | Quality | Relevance to a Pakistani buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charitable camps | Free basic legs, fitted in a day | Functional. Fit varies. | Where a camp is held within reach |
| Government manufacturer | Basic exoskeletal and modular parts | Simple and robust | Rarely supplied outside public schemes |
| European designs made or sold in India | Stance control and polycentric knees, Multiflex style feet | Good, with documents | The most useful tier, when a route exists |
| Private workshops | Low priced feet, knees, adapters | From sound to poor | Apply the same checks as for any economy part |
Where they fit, and where they do not
Worth asking about
- the Multiflex style ankle for uneven ground at modest cost
- stance control knees for older walkers
- barefoot style rubber feet for rural, wet or squatting lifestyles
- parts a relative can document and carry properly
Be careful of
- assuming a route exists. Ask us first.
- unmarked structural parts, from anywhere
- buying a foot without knowing the side, size, weight category and heel height
- warranty, which normally applies only where the part was bought
Similar lives, similar needs
What makes Indian designs interesting is not price alone. They were developed for users whose lives resemble ours: squatting, sitting on the floor, open footwear, monsoon water, long walks on unmade ground. European feet were designed for shoes and pavements.
That is why a rubber barefoot style foot, or a simple ball joint ankle, can suit a farmer from Tharparkar better than an imported carbon spring.
Whatever the source, our rule is the same: a named maker, a marked weight rating and documents, written on the quotation.

Imported and fitted to order
Artificial Leg Karachi imports and fits components from these makers to order. We are independent of every manufacturer, recommend by need and budget, and earn nothing from steering you to one name over another. Ranges change, so we confirm the current model, its weight rating and the paperwork before anything is ordered. All maker and product names are trade marks of their owners and are used here only to describe the products.
Can my relatives in India send a prosthetic foot to Pakistan?
Speak to us before anything is bought. The side, size, stiffness category, heel height and adapter type must match, and the parcel must be able to reach you with proper documents under the rules of the day.
What is ALIMCO?
A government owned Indian manufacturer of artificial limbs and mobility aids, supplying public welfare schemes in large volumes. Its products are basic and robust.
Is an Indian made knee as good as a German one?
A European design produced in India by the parent company's own firm is a sound mid tier part. Basic local knees are simpler. Neither matches a premium hydraulic or electronic knee, and many users do not need one.
Is a free camp leg a good option?
It gets a person standing at no cost, which is valuable. It is made in hours, without a test socket or training, so comfort and walking quality vary. Many people later have a custom socket made.
