Artificial leg for women
The engineering of a leg is the same for everyone. What differs for many women is what surrounds it: privacy in the fitting room, how the leg looks under clothes and in open footwear, changing heel heights, and a body that changes through pregnancy and the years. None of this is vanity. It decides whether the leg is worn.
What is different about an artificial leg for a woman?
The socket, knee and foot work the same way. The differences are practical: the leg is usually finished with a shaped cover matched to the other calf and ankle, the foot is chosen for the footwear she actually wears including heels, the fit allows for fluid changes across the month and during pregnancy, and the fitting is arranged with the privacy and company she is comfortable with.
Privacy during assessment and fitting
An above knee socket reaches the groin, and a below knee fitting needs the leg uncovered to mid thigh. Many women, and their families, hesitate to come for that reason alone. Please do not let it stop you. It is arranged in whatever way you are comfortable with.
- A mother, sister, daughter or friend is welcome in the room throughout.
- Bring loose shorts or a wrap skirt to wear under your clothes, so only the limb is uncovered.
- The fitting room door is closed and the examination is unhurried.
- Every step is explained before it is done, and you may ask to pause at any point.
- Tell us your preferences when you book, so the visit is planned around them.

A leg that matches the other one
Shape
The foam cover is carved against measurements and a tracing of your other leg: calf fullness, ankle width, the line of the shin. It should fill a shalwar or trouser leg evenly.
Skin tone
Stockings and sprayed skins come in a range of South Asian tones. We match in daylight, against your own leg, not from a chart under tube lights.
The foot
In sandals the foot is on show. Ask for a foot shell with separated toes and natural nails. Silicone shells can even take nail colour.
Custom silicone
For those who want the closest likeness, a hand finished silicone cover copies veins, freckles and skin texture. It costs a great deal more, and needs gentle care.
Heels, khussas, sandals and flats
A prosthetic foot is aligned to one heel height. Change the heel and the whole leg tilts: forward in a higher heel, so the knee wants to buckle, and backward in a flat, so walking feels uphill.
- Tell us your everyday footwear and bring it. The leg is set to that.
- Keep other pairs within about one centimetre of that heel height, or use a small wedge inside the flatter pair.
- For weddings and functions, an adjustable heel foot lets you change the angle yourself by pressing a button. It costs more, and is worth asking about.
- Backless slippers and loose khussas fall off a foot that cannot grip. Choose a pair with a back strap, or a snug closed shape.
- Very high, narrow heels are unsafe on any prosthesis. A block heel of modest height is the sensible limit.

The monthly cycle, pregnancy, and weight
A socket is rigid, and a stump is not. Women notice this more than men, because fluid shifts are larger and more regular.
Across the month
Many women find the socket tighter for a few days before a period. Remove a sock ply on those days, and put it back afterwards. It is normal, and it is not a fault in the leg.
Pregnancy
Weight, fluid and balance all change. The stump usually swells, the centre of gravity moves forward, and ligaments loosen. Expect socket adjustments, perhaps a temporary larger socket in the later months, and use a stick outdoors in the last trimester. Tell your obstetrician that you wear a prosthesis, and tell us as soon as you know.
After delivery, and later in life
The stump returns toward its earlier size over some months, and a socket review is sensible. After the menopause, thinner bones make a fall more serious, so stability is given more weight in choosing a knee and foot.

The work of a household
Much advice about prostheses imagines an office and a car. A great many of our women patients run a home: standing at a stove, sitting on the floor to knead dough or sort rice, bathing children, praying, and sitting on the floor with guests.
Tell us about your day in detail. A lower, flared back edge on a below knee socket allows deeper kneeling and floor sitting. A rotation adapter above the knee lets the shin fold to the side. A stable, slightly cushioned foot helps with long standing in the kitchen. A high stool by the counter saves the stump more than any component.
Carry a child on the hip of your sound side, and hold a rail on stairs while you do. Prayer postures are covered in their own guide.
Will the leg show under shalwar kameez?
With a well shaped cover, no. The outline matches the other leg. Wider shalwar and trousers hide a knee joint completely. In fitted trousers an above knee leg may show a little at the knee when sitting.
Can I bring a female relative into the fitting room?
Yes, always, and for the whole visit. Tell us when you book if you have any other preference about how the examination is arranged.
Can I wear heels?
A modest block heel, yes, if the foot is set for it or is an adjustable heel type. The same leg cannot serve both flats and heels without adjustment, so decide what you wear most days.
I am planning a pregnancy. Should I wait to get a new socket?
Not necessarily. Walk well now, and plan for adjustments during the pregnancy. If a replacement socket is already due, tell us your plans so we can choose a construction that is easier to modify.
Does a cosmetic cover make the leg heavier or hotter?
A foam cover adds a few hundred grams and a little warmth, and slightly stiffens the knee bend. Most women find the trade worth it. It can be added some months after fitting, once the alignment has settled.
