Why the qualification matters

What a degree in prosthetics covers

In Pakistan, artificial limbs are made by people with very different levels of training, from workshop technicians who learned on the job to degree qualified clinicians. Families are rarely told the difference, and it is fair to ask.

A four year degree in prosthetic and orthotic sciences covers anatomy, the mechanics of walking, the diseases that lead to amputation, materials, socket design, alignment, and supervised clinical practice with patients. PIPOS, in Peshawar, is one of the longest established schools for this profession in the country.

That training is what allows a prosthetist to decide that a stump is not ready, to recognise a skin change that needs a doctor, to choose a knee for safety, and to find the cause of a walking fault instead of guessing.

Any person shown is Pakistani and well dressed, with the face out of frame. Natural daylight, realistic colours, documentary style. No text, no signage, no logos, no watermarks. 4:3 aspect ratio.
In practice

What he does at each stage of your leg

  • Assessment. Examines the stump, joints, strength, the other leg and general health, and gives you a recommendation and a price range.
  • Casting. Marks and casts or scans the stump personally.
  • Model and test socket. Shapes the model, then reads the skin through the clear test socket and corrects it.
  • Alignment. Tunes the leg while watching you walk, from the front and the side.
  • Training. Leads gait training from the bars to stairs and outdoors.
  • Follow up. Reviews your walking videos, adjusts the socket, and tells you honestly when a new one is due.

At Artificial Leg Karachi his work is devoted to lower limb prosthetics, from partial foot devices to hip level legs.
