Socket and suspension specialists
The big names make knees and feet. Comfort, though, is decided at the socket, and some of the cleverest ideas there come from small firms that make one kind of thing: a dial that tightens a socket, a lock that lets air out, a gel pad, a coupler that swaps a foot in seconds.
What is an adjustable prosthetic socket?
An adjustable socket has panels or a gap that the wearer can tighten or loosen, usually by turning a small dial that winds a cable. It lets the fit be tuned through the day as the stump changes size, instead of adding and removing socks. The best known dial system comes from Click Medical. Other small makers supply locks, gel products, liners and quick change couplers that solve specific fit problems.
Who they are
Click Medical
American maker of a dial and cable system that is built into a socket so the wearer can tighten or loosen it by hand. Useful for stumps that change size.
Coyote
American maker from Idaho, known for socket locks that also expel air, for durable composite socket materials, and for other practical socket hardware.
Silipos
American maker of mineral oil gel products: liners, sleeves, pads and sheaths that cushion and protect fragile skin.
Ferrier Coupler
American maker of a quick disconnect coupler that lets a foot or a lower leg section be swapped in seconds, without tools and without losing alignment.
Uniprox
German maker of liners, sleeves and related products for the skin and socket interface.
Wagner Polymertechnik
German maker of polymer liners, sleeves, feet and vacuum suspension components.
Which specialist part for which problem
| The problem | The kind of part | Makers to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Stump swells and shrinks through the day, or on dialysis days | Adjustable socket with a dial | Click Medical |
| Pin lock traps air, or the leg pistons | A lock with an air expulsion valve | Coyote |
| One tender spot in a good socket | Stick on gel pad or sheet | Silipos, ALPS |
| Fragile skin needing a soft interface | Gel liner or sheath | Silipos, Uniprox, Wagner Polymertechnik, WillowWood |
| One socket, two feet: everyday and water, or everyday and blade | Quick disconnect coupler | Ferrier Coupler |
| Sleeve suspension in a hot climate | Thin, durable knee sleeves | Uniprox, Wagner Polymertechnik, ALPS |
Where they fit, and where they do not
These parts earn their cost when
- a specific, named problem has resisted ordinary adjustment
- the stump size is unstable for a medical reason
- one socket must serve two purposes
- skin keeps breaking down at one place
They are not needed when
- socks and a routine adjustment solve it
- the real fault is a poor socket shape. Fix the socket first.
- the user cannot manage a dial or a coupler reliably
- the budget would be better spent on a replacement socket
Dialysis, fasting and the monsoon: why adjustability matters here
Stump volume changes more in our patients than textbooks written elsewhere assume. Dialysis patients are larger before a session and smaller after. A summer fast shrinks the stump by afternoon. Humidity and heat swell it.
For most people, socks are the answer and cost almost nothing. For a few, particularly dialysis patients with weak hands and poor eyesight, turning a dial is far easier than managing sock plies, and an adjustable socket is worth discussing.
A quick change coupler is the economical route to a water foot or a blade without a second socket.

Imported and fitted to order
Artificial Leg Karachi imports and fits components from these makers to order. We are independent of every manufacturer, recommend by need and budget, and earn nothing from steering you to one name over another. Ranges change, so we confirm the current model, its weight rating and the paperwork before anything is ordered. All maker and product names are trade marks of their owners and are used here only to describe the products.
Can an adjustable dial be added to my existing socket?
Sometimes. The socket needs panels or a gap for the cable to act on, so it is usually planned into a new socket. We will tell you after looking at yours.
What does a quick disconnect coupler do?
It lets the lower part of the leg be removed and another fitted in seconds, keeping the alignment. One socket can then carry an everyday foot, a water foot or a running blade.
Are gel pads a permanent solution to a sore spot?
They are a good short term fix. A persistent sore spot means the socket shape should be corrected, or the stump has changed and a new socket is due.
Do these small makers' parts work with the big brands?
Yes. They are designed to be built into any custom socket and to connect with standard adapters.
