Local vs imported artificial leg parts
Families are often told that a German leg is good and a local leg is bad. The truth is more useful than that. Every socket is made locally, by hand. Some imported parts are worth every rupee. Others add cost and nothing else.
Is an imported artificial leg better than a local one?
Not automatically. The socket, which matters most, is always made locally by your prosthetist, whatever the parts. Imported liners, knees and carbon feet are often better engineered and longer lasting. Basic feet, straps, covers and many simple knees made in the region do the same job at a fraction of the price. The best leg is usually a sensible mix.
There are three tiers, not two
Locally made
Sockets, straps, belts, foam inserts, cosmetic covers, simple SACH feet and basic knees. Low cost and repairable anywhere. Quality varies from workshop to workshop.
Regional mid range
Parts from established makers in Asia and Turkey. Tested to international load standards, a fraction of the European price, and good value for most users.
Premium imported
European, American and Icelandic makers. The most refined engineering, long track records and the highest prices. Service may mean sending the part abroad.
Where imported is worth it, and where it is not
| Part | Our general advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Socket | Always local. It must be. | It is made from your cast, by hand. Pay for skill and a test socket, not a label. |
| Liner | Mid range or premium if you can | It touches skin all day. Better gels last longer and cause fewer rashes in Karachi heat. |
| Adapters and pylon | Tested parts only, any origin | These carry your full weight. An untested adapter that cracks causes a serious fall. Never economise here. |
| Foot, low activity | Local or mid range | A SACH or simple multi axis foot does everything a home walker needs. |
| Foot, active user | Mid range or premium carbon | A properly engineered carbon spring is lighter, livelier and lasts. |
| Knee, older or home walker | Mid range safety or four bar knee | Safety comes from the design type, not the country. |
| Knee, active user | Premium hydraulic if affordable | Swing control and yielding on stairs are where premium engineering shows. |
| Cosmetic cover, straps, belts | Local | No benefit from importing. |
How to check that an imported part is genuine and new
There is a market in Pakistan for used, refurbished and copied prosthetic parts sold as new imports. A used part may work well, but you should know what you are buying and pay accordingly.
- Ask for the maker, model and serial number to be written on the quotation.
- Ask to see the part in its sealed packaging before it is fitted.
- Ask for the warranty card, and who honours it inside Pakistan.
- Check the weight rating printed on the part against your own weight.
- Be wary of a famous brand quoted far below everyone else. There is a reason.
- If a reused part is offered, that is fine if it is declared, inspected and priced as used.
Artificial Leg Karachi is not tied to any manufacturer. Brand names on this site are used only to describe products. We fit parts from several makers and recommend by need and budget, not by commission.

Three sensible mixes
Retired teacher, 68, below knee, diabetic
Local laminated socket with test socket, mid range cushioned gel liner with pin lock, local multi axis foot. The money goes to the liner and the fit.
Shop owner, 41, above knee after an accident
Local ischial containment socket, mid range four bar knee with pneumatic swing, mid range carbon foot, rotation adapter for floor sitting.
Engineer, 29, below knee, walks and cycles
Local carbon socket, premium silicone liner with suction, premium carbon energy return foot. Every part earns its price at his activity level.
Why imported prices keep moving
Imported parts are bought in euros and dollars. When the rupee moves, so does the price, sometimes between the day you were quoted and the day you return. Duties, freight and clearing time add further uncertainty.
For this reason our written quotations state how many days the figure is held. If a part must be ordered from abroad, we tell you the expected arrival time before you pay an advance, and the advance is recorded against the named part.
If a family member abroad offers to buy a part and send it, speak to us first. The category, the side and the adapter type must all match, and warranty is usually only honoured in the country of purchase.

Is a German leg made in Germany?
No. Only some of the parts are. The socket is made in Karachi from your cast, and the leg is assembled and aligned here. So the skill of the local prosthetist decides the result, whichever parts are used.
Are local parts safe?
Simple parts such as SACH feet, straps and covers, yes. For load carrying adapters, pylons and knees, we use parts that are tested to recognised load standards, whatever their origin.
Can my brother bring a foot from abroad?
Possibly, but check with us before he buys. The stiffness category, side, size, heel height and adapter type must all match, and returns are difficult. Warranty usually applies only where it was bought.
How much more does an imported leg cost?
As an indicative 2026 guide, a below knee leg with premium imported liner and carbon foot costs roughly two to four times a good local and mid range build. Above the knee, an imported hydraulic or electronic knee can multiply the total several times.
Will a more expensive leg make me walk better?
Only if the socket fits and the parts match your activity. Training makes more difference than price at almost every budget.
